1. The Volatility of the AI Economy

Pricing in the Artificial Intelligence sector is more volatile than in any other software vertical. Unlike traditional SaaS (e.g., Email Marketing or CRM) where pricing remains stable for years, AI pricing fluctuates monthly based on the underlying cost of compute. When OpenAI lowers the API cost for GPT-4o, downstream application vendors often adjust their pricing within weeks.

2. The "Hidden Tier" Problem

Our primary goal is to expose the "Hidden Tier." Many AI vendors use deceptive pricing structures to make their tools appear cheaper than they are. We have identified three common patterns derived from Dark Pattern research:

Pattern A: The "Credit" Obfuscation

A vendor charges $29/month for "500 Credits." Nowhere on the pricing page does it clearly state that generating one High-Res image costs 50 credits. This effectively means the plan only includes 10 images. We calculate the Real Unit Cost (e.g., "$2.90 per image") and display that in our reviews.

Pattern B: The " BYOK" (Bring Your Own Key) Trap

A tool charges $19/month for the interface but requires you to plug in your own OpenAI API key. This means your actual bill is $19 + API usage fees, which could be hundreds of dollars. We explicitly flag BYOK tools so you are not blindsided by double-billing.

Pattern C: The "Teaser" Free Trial

• Layer 2: The "Checkout" Test. For verified reviews, we often go through the checkout process (without completing purchase) to verify that there are no hidden "Setup Fees" or "Tax Surcharges" added at the last step.
• Layer 3: Historical Tracking. We maintain a log of previous prices. If a tool raises its price, we note the increase. (e.g., "Price increased by 20% in Q1 2026").

4. Currency and Regional Pricing

The AI market is global, but pricing is predominantly USD-centric. WhichAIPick standardizes all pricing in United States Dollars (USD).

Regional Parity Warning: Users in Europe, India, and South America should be aware that many AI vendors do not practice Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) pricing. A $20/month tool is significantly more expensive in real terms for a user in Mumbai than in New York. Where verified specific regional pricing exists, we attempt to note it.

5. Legacy Plans and Grandfathering

In AI, "Early Adopter" plans are gold. A plan purchased in 2023 might offer "Unlimited GPT-4" for $20/month, a plan that no longer exists for new users.

We review the Current Public Price. We do not account for legacy plans in our scoring, as those are not available to you, the new buyer. However, if a vendor breaks a promise to early adopters (e.g., canceling "Lifetime Deals"), we apply a severe "Trust Penalty" to their score.

6. Data Limitations

Despite our best efforts, perfect accuracy is impossible in a customized enterprise market.

• Enterprise Opaqueness: For "Contact Sales" tiers, we rely on anonymous user reports. Take these estimates with a grain of salt.
• Dynamic Discounts: Vendors often offer dynamic 20-30% discounts via exit-intent popups. We list the sticker price, not the discount price.
• Rapid API Changes: Sometimes OpenAI changes pricing at 2 AM. Our site updates within 24 hours, but there may be a lag.

7. Risk of Inaccuracy

We provide pricing data "as is." We are not responsible if a vendor changes their price between the time you read our review and the time you click "Buy." Always verify on the vendor's official domain.
