Glide

Glide is a no-code application platform designed to turn spreadsheets (Google Sheets, Excel, Airtable) or SQL databases into fully functional software applications precisely and rapidly. It abstracts away the UI design process entirely, automatically generating a mobile-first or desktop interface based on the underlying data structure.

Glide forces users into a standardized, highly polished design system. While this restricts extreme visual customization, it ensures that every application built on Glide looks professional, operates smoothly, and is impossible to "break" visually. It is highly optimized for internal company tools.

Glide features integrated AI capabilities, allowing applications to process text, analyze images, or generate content by mapping database rows directly to AI processing columns without manual API configuration.

Best For

  • Operations teams building internal workplace tools
  • Companies digitizing checklist and spreadsheet workflows
  • Non-technical managers needing mobile tracking solutions
  • Businesses requiring rapid MVP creation

How It Works

A user connects a data source (like a Google Sheet) to Glide. The platform immediately reads the rows and columns and generates a working directory-style app. The user configures the application via a sidebar, choosing how different data fields are displayed (as lists, cards, detail views, maps, etc.) and adding action buttons allowing users to add or edit data. The resulting progressive web app (PWA) is shared via a URL or QR code and can be saved to mobile home screens.

  • Native spreadsheet sync
  • SQL database integration
  • Integrated AI data columns
  • Barcode scanning and signature capture

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • established speed from spreadsheet to working application
  • UI is guaranteed to look professional and mobile-responsive
  • Very easy learning curve
  • Excellent integration for mobile device hardware (camera, location)

Cons

  • Strict UI rails prevent custom or bespoke design aesthetics
  • Not suitable for highly complex, multi-sided global SaaS products
  • Performance can lag on very large-scale unoptimized datasets
  • No native app store deployment (PWA only)

Pricing

Glide offers a free tier for building and testing basic apps. Paid plans scale based on the number of non-maker users accessing the app, the volume of data updates, and connection to higher-tier data sources like SQL servers. Team and Enterprise plans cater to large organizational deployments.

How It Compares

Glide competes with AppSheet, Bubble, and Softr. Glide is significantly more beautiful out-of-the-box and easier to use than AppSheet (Google's alternative). Softr excels at web portals based on Airtable, while Glide is superior for mobile-first utility applications. Bubble is infinitely more customizable and powerful for logic, but takes weeks to learn compared to Glide's hours.
